The Demon World Troupe - What are Abyss Actor?

Abyss Actor, or 魔界劇団 (Makai Gekidan), are a series of DARK Fiend Pendulum and Link monsters that are based on theatrical actors and performers, and each of their names is based on a role in a theatrical play. In addition, they have a sub-theme of Spell Cards called "Abyss Script" that helps them learn their play. They were used in the ARC-V anime by Sylvio Sawatari halfway through the series. The archetype was introduced in the OCG in Booster SP: Destiny Soldiers (2016) and has gotten three waves of support throughout the years. In Master Duel, they have their own dedicated secret pack called The Darkness Amuses.

Knowing their Role - Strategy and Playstyle

Their biggest strength comes from their ability to start their play with any Abyss actor, resulting in them swarming the field quickly. Their gimmicks are to steal the opponent's monster, mass-pop the field, and force the opponents to do certain actions in order to achieve certain conditions. This deck's Pendulum prowess separates it from other common Pendulum strategies, making it a unique Pendulum deck. With a low ceiling, it can be a good pick-up for new players who want to try out a Pendulum deck. Unfortunately, however, our strategy doesn't mix well with other archetypes, with our cards notoriously having integrated locks.

When it comes to their combos, they have a 1-card combo in the form of Abyss Actor - Extras. With it, this can achieve an Abyss Actor - Super Producer with two Pendulum Summoned Abyss Actors in the Main Monster Zone, with Abyss Actor - Sassy Rookie set in the Pendulum Zone providing protection or disruption, in addition to any Abyss Script set on your field. While not impressive at first glance, this board is very reactive to what the opponents might do.

Furthermore, this deck has an explosive 1-turn play that comes from the opening Abyss Actor - Curtain Raiser, Abyss Actor - Wild Hope, and Abyss Script - Dramatic Story. This combo can achieve a strong board by summoning a 3-material Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess together with a Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon plus a Abyss Actor - Super Producer on the field.

Thanks for the great guide! Been taking abyss actors to locals for a while now and love them! One card for blind second builds I HIGHLY recommend is Alpha, the Master of Beasts. Being able to jump on the field to disrupt, and then jump back into the hand so you can still special curtain raiser and then usually come back a second time has great synergy with the deck!

I consistently have way too much fun playing this deck when my opponent doesn't bother to read the cards. ...then they use Feather Duster...

Is there any synergy here with Unchained? I feel like Aruha alone might provide some value here for his ability to pop your cards* for a special summon from hand. It's a fiend lock, but that's far from the harshest lock in this deck.

Abyss Actor itself is a very xenophobic archetype. It does not mix well with other decks.

I messed with it a very small amount after seeing the new support, and that Producer only requires "a Fiend". It's... passable, I guess? You have to hold your xenolock effects pretty hard, but you kind of want to do so anyway. The main problem I was finding was that you need to draw both engines, and that if you use the Unchained cards you feel like you have enough materials to do generic ED stuff (Apollousa, Vortex Dragon...) but the Fiend lock is too much for even that.

If you're going to try it, 3x Aruha and like 1x of some other targets is probably the best you'll do.

So definitely no expert but these guys are my favorite deck to play by far and i had a few extra tips I've noticed from all my duels with them. Superstar at 3 is pretty good for the OTK style as she's got a lot of power and her "set one abyss script" effect isn't a hard once per turn so you can grab an extra copy of abyss king for those pesky monsters who ignore destruction the first time. Another niche thing is having a copy of Fantasy Magic for any monsters who can't be destroyed or targeted, as Sassy Rookie will keep each of your actors from being destroyed once by battle. And also a tech card I would consider for going first is Amorphage Goliath. It's very easy to get him on board with Hyper Director and you can comfortably sit on him for a turn to lock your opponent out of their extra deck as he's a pretty decent beatstick. But, I absolutely love this guide and I'm so happy to see some love and appreciation for a highly underrated deck <3

I play Abyss Actors, and I disagree some points. I feel like 1 Fanasy Magic can be played, I feel like sometimes it helps, it could out dragoon if it was legal xD. I started experimenting just recently with Liberty Dramatist, and it is surprisingly good I feel like it is an at least 2. It's effect also triggers if summoned with Director's effect, after summened with director you can pull a Dramatic Story from the deck, use it on Liberty Dramatist and choose to destroy it, and it also recycles the Dramatic Story to your deck from the GY for later use. Also Dramatic Story is a 3. Sassy Rookie is 0 I think. I like to run a 2nd copy of the fieldspell, for backup. Comic Relief is not really used for triggering the destruction effect of the scripts, I feel like it's main job is to summon Chaos Angel(this may not have been an option when the article was written, but before chaos angel times Comic Relief was a 0-1 for me, now it is a strong 2) , and the pendulum effect can be usefull sometimes, realisticly you are never going to use it for it's monster effect. And I like to run more Opening Ceremony too. Usually these are sent to the GY to activate Curtain Riser's monster effect. But drawing 5 can be nice too. The last thing is Leading Lady I like to run 1 for the monster effect, beacause you usually leave your opponent a link monster with 1600 atk(at least not with 800 atk anymore xD) to attack, so it could actually help to survive, or at least save some LP to make sure you can use Madonna's effect next turn, also putting a script to the field after it is destroyed is nice too.
