Notes & Combos
I used a few different variations of Reasoning/Monster Gate Paleo decks this season and this was the build that I finally landed on that was able to take me to M1.
Why Pharaonic Advent?
When playing other variations of Runick Paleo that tried to abuse Redeemable Jar as the win condition there were 2 issues I'd run into:
- There's no easy way to search Jar
- Runick heavy hands or Reasoning/Monster Gates that don't mill well would lead to fragile turn 1's that could be easily pushed through.
Pharaonic Advent helps fix both of these issues. It's way easier to grab Jar from deck instead of only relying on milling it and Pharaonic Advent can grab you Summon Limit for the games you just need to sit on a floodgate to survive.
Explaining some other choices
-
Ipiria is the other monster I chose to use because it synergizes with Pharaonic Advent, is level 2, and its effect helps enhance both engines, especially when used with Spright Elf.
-
Metalfoes Fusion makes Hugin effect "free" when its drawn and makes your Reasoning/Monster Gate better when not. This is a gamble deck at its core, having an additional card to help increase your "luck" is justified to keep up with more consistent meta strategies.
-
Soul Sweeper > Anomalocaris. This deck can make Anomalocaris pretty easily, BUT you are almost always going to be already winning when that happens. Soul Sweeper being an option to help stabilize losing/neutral gamestates is more valuable.
Changes I would make going forward
+1 Munin the Runick Wings / -1 Chaos Angel:
- Chaos Angel never meaningfully contributed to winning me any games when I summoned it, whereareas not having a 4th fairy in Extra Deck for Pharaonic Advent effect singlehandily lost me a game. (This was the only game I lost while climbing that could've been easily won by having a better Extra Deck)
- Munin also has some other weird uses, such as having the highest DEF for a Runick monster and being able to unbrick a dead Hope for Escape if your life is too low to pay the 1000LP cost.
+1 Foolish Burial Goods (FBG) / -1 Traptantalizing Tune:
- Dead Traptantalizing Tune(s) in hand contributed to the bulk of my brick hands.
- When playing against Combo you will often need 2-3 spells to trade 1 for 1 into Omni Negates if you go second. Running 1 FBG/2 Tunes instead of 3 Tunes will slightly boost your winrate going second into those types of decks. (FBG sends Black Goat Laughs)
